"Toothpick Bridge school assignment"

I and my partner, David, must build a bridge out of toothpicks and glue. Here are the rules:

CONSTRUCTION:

1. The overall width of the bridge must not exceed 3".
2. The overall length of the bridge must not exceed 9".
3. The bridge shall allow a 1-inch wide x 3/4-inch thick board to pass through it over the roadbed.
4. The bridge can't have anything under it
5. Must be made out of toothpicks and glue only
6. Adhesives may be used only at joints
7. The mass must not exceed 20g.

This is an assignment and a contest to see which bridge can hold the most mass. We would like some help on what holds mass best and how the bridge could effeciently be constructed.
