If you are using Popsicle sticks, I would recommend using a standard truss rather then an arch. This would be for ease of building, and not a structural efficiency reason.

What some specs on what you are trying to do?

As in, height, width, length, type of wood, etc that you need to use.

Also, how much weight does your bridge need to hold?

i have to build a bridge for my high school science class. it has to be free standing, so an arch bridge is the best form for it.
It has to hold a 5-gallon plastic bucket of water from the center of it for more than 30 seconds, and it has to be made of seperate pieces, none of which can be longer than 6 in. and it has to connect somehow.
i can use anything to make the bridge, but no permanently mounted supports of any kind, including (but not limited to) the following: nails, screws, reinforced concrete, or any thermonuclear fasteners.
any help?

Wow, Jake, that is a tough one.

Okay, first take a 5 gallon bucket and fill it with water and weigh it. Now you know, in pounds, what the bridge has to hold. Since you can use pretty much anything, the first thing that comes to my mind is metal. However, I don't know where you could get the pieces you need, and you would have to have some soldering skills.

You could try using wood. Because you can only use pieces no longer than 6 inches, you are going to have a lot of joints.

Are there any other constraints? How long does your bridge have to be?
