"Bridge Competition."

Hey Guys, im doing this thing at school-a competition to produce the lightest but strongest bridge, and i'd just like to know what the main idea of a bridge is and how you'd make the bit which takes the weight out of straws, and also make it strong? My teacher said the less straws you use, the stronger it could be- i don't understand that, please explain it i'll be really grateful lol! ;] Thanks x
