Hi, I collect random information on bridges in the US, but I have no way of getting your answer from my notes.

I recall reading a LOOK magazine article back in the early 1960s (or LIFE, and maybe it was the late 1950s) that said New York City had 88 bridges. In all my years of collecting bridge facts, I have never come across that magazine article again. Obviously I am sorry that I was not keeping all printed references back then.

I have built a note card encyclopedia on bridges with about 80,000 note cards filed. I have no idea how many cards have yet to get filed. Someday I hope to have enough file cabinets to make retrival easier.

Good luck with your research. ALAN VIEWIG

I took a recent trip to Venice, Italy. The guidebook says that there are over 400 bridges that connect the over 100 islands that make up the city. If you are counting footbridges, this may be your winner.

Cut from two other web sites....

After Venice, Pittsburgh boasts the most number of bridges in a city.

from
I have heard that Pittsburgh has more bridges than any other city in the world. Just how many bridges are there in Pittsburgh?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First we must define what we call a "bridge". We will use the National Bridge Inspection Standard (NBIS) definition of a structure length of 20 feet or greater. Defining what is meant by "Pittsburgh" is more problematic. Pittsburgh is composed of a large number of small communities that are unified by the city's bridges. What people generally consider "the 'burgh" is a larger area than simply the confines of the city limits. It is appropriate to consider greater Pittsburgh as consisting of Allegheny County.
Next there is the issue of ownership. Various authorities have ownership of individual bridges in the Pittsburgh area. The breakdown is as follows:

Allegheny County: 186
City of Pittsburgh: 74
State owned: 565
Others, including other towns and the Port authority: 119

Thus, there is a total of 944 highway bridges in greater Pittsburgh (Allegheny County). This does not include railroad bridges.
No matter how ya' cut it, there are a heck of a lot of bridges in Pittsburgh.

C'mon people... Have you checked out Hamburg, Germany yet? I've read that they have more than 3000! (in words: three thousand) Yes. I'm not joking.

I think pittsburgh has the most bridges. i mean the whole city is criss crossed with bridges. no wonder its other name is steel city. it is extremely difficult to navigate your way around if you new in town. its not like new york where one major street runs into another major street.. it is relatively straightforward not in pittsburgh.

London, UK, has over 5000 highway bridges, and on top of that you would have to add railway bridges, aqueducts etc. I'm not sure if the figure includes footbridges or not.

A more useful criterion might be "number of bridges over the city's major river(s)", since the vast majority of bridges are unremarkable structures carrying roads over minor rivers or railways in the city suburbs.

Pittsburgh has 30 river bridges with an additional 29 river bridges within Allegheny County for a total of 59. Then you may start to add the many others which cross streams, ravines, roads, railroads, etc. The typically cited figure of over 2,800 in Allegheny County apparently doesn't include railroad bridges owned by the railroads, and only includes those over 8 feet in length.

The Association for Bridge Design and Construction (ABCD) only counts the non-railroad bridges over 20 feet in length and Pittsburgh still comes out on top.

The most bridges in the world belongs to Allegheny county in Pennslyvania. Pittsburgh is included in the county and there is over 1900 bridges in the area.

If you count structures over 20 feet long, than Los Angeles County, where the car rules, wins with around 3700 state and local agency bridges, overcrossings, undercrossing, freeway connectors, etc... However, if you are referring to structures that span over water, it is definitely not Los Angeles.

You all might want to consider St. Petersburgh. If only counting the city proper, they have 539 bridges.

Venice sounds like the winner for the world. What about North America or the U.S.?

I do know that Chicago has approximately 130 bridges over the rivers (Chicago & Calumet) and Ship and Sanitary Canal with in the municipality. Approximately 24 are Railroad bridges. Chicago also boasts the most movable bridges (37) of any city in the world. I wonder if 37 is still enough to hold that title?

I know for a FACT that it is Pittsburgh.
I live there and I'm from there and I learned about it in school and on the news so many times.
And when we had the 'down town' walk they said it and they said we have a little less than 3,000 and they also said Andy Warhol (who is from here) loved doing his work on the bridges. Just go to his museum and see all of his art! They're amazingggg you have not seen Pittsburgh until you've seen that.
You can't go down town without crossing ATLEAST TWO bridges.

...And that is why Pittsburgh is called "the city of many bridges/boats"
Also we have allll these bridges because there's three looooooooooooooooooooooooooooong rivers.
& Google can tell you alot.
Haha.

I have to disagree with you Americans. London has more bridges than any American city. It has more than 30 over the Thames alone and at least 5000 in total not counting individual spans of railway viaducts, many of which have several hundred spans.

I know it is hard for Americans to accept that there is a world outside their borders but in this case London rules!!
